cruces animal control today i'll be
presenting the july 2022 numbers behalf
of gino unfortunately he's at gene jury
duty unfortunately fortunately
right there
lieutenant weedle also was not available
so
bear with me i was given a crash course
um let's see
i'm sorry

okay this is the reported straight
animals we had 467 reported stray
animals for july 2022.
245 of those were goa gone on arrival
222 straight animals apprehended
171 strays impounded at the ascmv
123 of those were dogs 48 were cats
51 successful field returns 15
unsuccessful attempted field returns
were impounded at the aac
a total of 66 identifiable stray animals
this is the reported straight animal
calls a three-year comparison
for july we had a total of
467 stray animal calls
for a total of 3 215 reported for the
year to date
next up we have the three-year field rto
comparison
for july of 2022 we have a total of 51
for the grand total for the year we have
337 returns
the community cap program
for july
we have a total of 75
cat and trap calls and nine of those
were released because they met the
criteria
bringing us to a total for the year of
and 52 had been released
reasons for owner releasing animals we
have seven dogs
released based on aggression toward
people and or other pets
one of those were aggression toward a
toddler one aggression toward her pups
seven dogs were released due to owners
being enabled unable to care for them
six of those dogs were new residents do
not allow dogs on the premises
four were cats an owner unable to care
for
three dogs they kept escaping two dogs
are released due to old age one was a
sick dog euthanasia request
and one was for too many complaints and
eviction threatened
reasons unable to field rto nine were no
contact by phone or at residence
one was an arizona address
four chip not updated
to owners out of town
and that concludes the numbers for july

i'm brian hulsey i'm the caseworker for
donating county animal control i'm here
to present the donating county animal
control july 2022 numbers
our reported straights for july was 248
reported strays
out of those 248 we ended up picking up
stray animals
60 of those animals were cats and 129 of
them were straight dogs
for that month we had nine sick or
injured animals we had two injured cats
and seven dogs
our owner surrenders for this month was
a little higher than normal we had 22
owner surrenders and they were all dogs
this is our reported stray animal calls
for your comparison
this is our four-year field return
it's our field return to owner
comparison chart
this year for july 2022 we had 22.
these are additional animals that were
picked up
again we had no owner surrendered cats
we had 22 owner surrendered dogs we had
nine sick or injured animals
we had seven welfare hold animals and
that's again for
if a sheriff's unit picks up
someone for a warrant or something like
that and they have animals in their
vehicles we come and pick them up and
take them as a welfare hold
we had eight shelter quarantines we had
four home quarantines
we had two brought in for
a case
and then
currently we have five animals
currently waiting for
for the court systems to decide what
we're going to do with those five
animals at our live courthold facility
and we had one rabies submission
this is our
districts that we have
and this is broken down for each
district how many cats and dogs
that we had for each district
we had
this is our stray cats picked up per
district
for july and the comparison for the year
and again this is the same thing just
for the stray dogs for the year
for some reason and this one if you can
see for district 7 for some reason we
had a lot of stray dogs that we ended up
picking up this month
normally it's not that high
um and then this is our reasons for
owner releases um again at eagle 22
we had 14 that they were unable to care
for
12 of them were all picked up together
they were puppies
that were from the same litter so that's
why it was so high this month
we had one vicious or livestock attack
we had one sick or injured
we had four that the landlord just
didn't allow them to have the animals
there with them and we had two for bites
and that's the end of presentation stand

when you say rabies hold
is that a confirmed rabies case
typically or is that a specific
quarantine that you might that you don't
know are you talking about the one on
the internet um so this is for
um i believe this was for a bat that was
in the house
so per protocol we
euthanized it and we sent it for rabies
testing just to make sure um it did come
back negative okay thank you i just was
curious what the difference was between
that and quarantine type situations i
appreciate it thank you any other

comes to the
those that were surrendered because they
weren't the landlord did not allow them
do we track if maybe they had a
animal companion certificate or
service animal status
we don't track those
usually if they have something like that
they usually let us know ahead of time
we usually call ahead of time just to
see why they're wanting to get rid of
the animal we try to give them
educational or other ways of getting the
animal another home before we come pick
them up but usually for something like
that they usually tell us

i'm now the assistant director and i'm
the director
uh director of animal service center
messiah valley
present to you today july
findings on the august board meeting
so currently at the center as of
yesterday 480
animals there 387 dogs 92 cats
so we're still below
last year which is good
intake still continues to be lower than
2021 uh we're at 400 or sorry 755 477
those were dogs
270 those were cats and we had seven
others which could be anything besides
dogs and cats so i know we had some
chickens
come in as well so
these are adoption returns we had zero
cats returned for the month of july
for dogs it was five
behavior problems lifestyle changes were
the reasons we do continue to offer
with donaiana county humane society the
rough to ready program where somebody
calls for instance the behavior problems
would be perfect
we
let them know that they have this option
for free that flyer is contained in
their adoption paperwork when they read
when they do adopt an animal
we had a great meeting with the dona
county humane society and i met the new
director that's going to be coming on
board there and
they said that they actually do have
people to take advantage of that rougher
and ready program
if i remember correctly it was about 10
to 15 a month
that do do us so it is a great program
continues to work and we continue to
offer that
this is one that we added in diverted
intake that is any any intake that
or any animal that would come into the
center but we diverted it or the
individual diverted this somehow
so for instance somebody comes in
with a stray dog that they found
and
we say well can you hold on to it here's
some we give them a list of things that
they can do to try to find the owner go
for a walk put a put a sign out in your
front yard and so if they say yeah i can
do that for a little while that's the
diverted intake
so in july we diverted 301 animals from
coming into the center
here's our outcomes we ended with a live
release rate which is the number of
animals or the percentage of animals
that leave the center alive
in july that's 76.3 percent higher than
2021 but a little bit lower than 2020.
the um
one that i wanted to point out the most
is that rescued 19.5 percent it's
far below the 28 and even the 39 it was
in 2020
as we're experiencing our rescues are
the same
wherever we ask we're full we're full
we're full
and we can see that from the big numbers
the years previous
so the inventory is all out there we
continue to push as much as we can
and here are our transfers
again our local ones continue to help us
out so much action program for animals
or apas is known for 25 cats
most of those kittens
kittens put a lar or a huge burden on
individuals and rescues because of the
high maintenance that they are so i
appreciate them doing that
cherished canine 14 dogs took from us
front range food and rescue 30 cats
so it just goes on and on we thank them
so very much all of our rescues 147 was
the total
our euthanasia reasons july
the number one reason for cats was
medical respiratory signs
and for dogs the number one reason was
medical parvo
non-treatment that means they came in
with the signs
or came or showed the clinical signs of
parvo and at that time we had no room
or
to be able to treat the animal
i do want to go back to that one just so
you understand our
update on our distemper issue that we
had several months ago
we actually for the last two testings
that we did we had zero come back with
distemper
we had one foster actually that wasn't
in the building one foster came back
positive but
um so the last two and that's like i
believe one was 62 animals tested and
that came back to zero and the other one
was just as large so we are very
grateful for our medical director and
also our uh
dr hadden and also our kennel supervisor
paul richardson for working together
getting animals moved into each specific
areas
and then
both staff of those individuals working
together to get that
distemper under control we sent out a
notice to our rescues as well that work
with us and many of them are starting to
take from us again
this is a slide that was requested by
the board from last time this is our
surgeries so we always put in our
presentation
how many surgeries are done
however to give you a breakdown of the
type and also how many that month and
then a total so trap need to return cats
146 adoption
sterilizations
we focused a lot on this time in july
and that was 154
shelter foster surgeries was 25
and then other at 101.
so other could be
like return to owners where
they come in they said i like to get my
animals sterilized
that could be an other
the
and also it could be like if we work
with we work with snap
so it could be those animals as well
uh as you can see when we focus high on
one specific type of adoption
then something is lower
and you can see how that we kind of
cycle that through the months of which
ones to focus on
our visitors actually skyrocketed this
this coming time this is individual
2115 into the center we contribute that
to the great press that we received in
july
the
also our great presence on facebook and
you're going to see facebook was also at
an all-time high as well
adoption appointments we had 123
adoptions via appointments i'm sorry 123
appointments in july
and 84 resulted in adoption so that's 64
percent
so people continue to make
and keep appointments and then adoptions
are a direct result from that
now 64. 64 is important because when we
look at the walk-in adoptions
we had 383 groups walk in and they
they specifically selected
adoption on the sign-in form
and of those
actually ended up in adoptions
so appointments is still much more
higher percentage because people are
there for the purpose of and uh and look
at it but we continue to do the hybrid
of both
adoptions and our walk-in adoptions and
appointment adoptions
volunteers continue to be really
a lot of the backbone
of our off-sites
and
cat care teams dog walkers just do
amazing things
total volunteers that's after our
volunteer coordinator went through and
took out individuals volunteers that
have not responded to attended to
in
any events or emails
she also sent out an email right before
she was going to do that and no response
so that is a cleaned up number
total hours was a staggering 672
hours
total for the month of july
our web page views was the highest we've
ever had at 44
594.
we contributed a lot of this to
the announcements that we put on the
same thing with facebook we started the
announcements for our drive-through
clinic
in the end of july
and here's our facebook views as you can
see it is just astronomical 4470
and again between the press that we
received in july and then also
announcing our facebook or i'm sorry our
drive-through clinic really drove those
numbers up
and speaking of our drive-through clinic
this was in actually in august so we're
gonna
i'm gonna move forward a month on you uh
but i just so excited i wanted to tell
you that it was a huge success 583
rabies vaccines this is all in one day
534 dhpp vaccines that's the distemper
parvo
185 bortela 80 feline vaccines and
292 microchips
were done in one day
this is an astronomical
capability of my co-workers it is so
much work to put one of these on
especially kudos to our rescue
coordinator liz seeley and also
others that were involved they we
like to do at least four in a year
and we're going to be doing another one
before the end of the year but i have to
give my my coworkers some time to kind
of forget what how much
how much work it was
i did bring with us totals of
i want to read these to you of
ever since we started doing these
so the first one we did was in june of
and then ending with this one that was
in august 6th
we've done 2794
dhpp vaccines
bordetella
fbrcp or that's feline vaccines
3446 rabies vaccines
1708 microchips
so not including the microchips the
total amount of vaccines that we've done
since 2019
and that's our presentation i

have a finance committee meeting um
a lot of members from uh budget and
finance staff were there
and we're able to offer some of the
resources available to mr thacker and
his manager management analyst so that
we can fine-tune some of the line items
that need to be addressed and also some
vacancy so it was a good productive
meeting a lot of
questions that were answered and then
today we have armando that will be
providing the financial report thank you

statement of net position
for the period july 2022 we had a cash
balance of 1 million
a receivables balance of five thousand
two hundred dollars
which is our total assets of one million
three hundred thousand and sixty four
dollars
for our liabilities we had balance of
fifty six thousand four hundred and
eighty one dollars
and revenue collected in advance of two
hundred and eighty thousand seven
hundred and seventy three dollars
which left us an unassigned fund balance
of nine hundred and sixty two thousand
eight hundred and ten dollars
okay next we have our statement our
change in net position
so total revenues for the period or
seven hundred and nineteen thousand
eight hundred and thirteen dollars
total expenditures a hundred and thirty
seven thousand nine hundred and fourteen
dollars
so that was a total positive net change
eighty of
thousand eight hundred and ninety nine
dollars
okay next is the change in net position
budget to actual
um same numbers as the previous slide
just as they uh compared to budget
so given this was the first
month of the fiscal year our budget
parameters 8.3
total revenue was 18.7 percent of budget
so well over that parameter
and uh expenditures were 3.6 percent of
budget
so well under the
parameter so overall a pretty good month
um next is the line graph
given it's just the first month
of the fiscal year there's
nothing else to compare to it's just the
same numbers

i did meet with clint this on august 2nd
we talked about sort of
planning for upcoming months what the
what's sort of on the agenda for the old
shelter and thinking about
some sort of strategic planning that we
might do collectively as a board
together with clinton in the near future
so
so have that on on your radar and i
appreciate clint for i think looking
forward and some of it we'll figure out
some of the details and and make that
happen this fall to
sort of make sure that we have a
plan for

the opening and and continued sort of
expansion or change services that might
come with a new building too so thank

next up i think facilities
yes thank you we did meet um i'm gonna
ask clint to come up i know there's
always um
changes but overall we speak to the
facility currently the
the population of the animals any
concerns that we have on the building
i know there were a couple
but
and then the new building so every since
we meet so early that first thursday of
the month
things change quite a bit through the
month so i'm glad i'm gonna put you on
the spot
you are too that's i'm gonna have to
think back so i know one of the things
we talked about was electricity issues
in one of the kennel none of the plugs
worked but we were able to have the city
of las cruces came in and fixed that so
we have
uh outlets that are working now in that
kennel area
we have developed with all the rain we
have developed a leak in our roof
over one of the kennels we thought it
was initially condensation coming down
the pipe from
the hvac unit but we think it's more of
the rain water because that's usually
when it happens
so we have the city of las cruces called
on that to come and check it out
interesting enough i
i put on my calendar when the two year
warranty expires on the roof because it
was just completed two years ago and it
was it was a week and a half ago it was
when it expired so that's just the way
things go right
i can also inform you that the new
building is moving along really well
i was in there yesterday and i did a
live
facebook for everybody to see
the they've painted in the back portion
of the center
so those are going on and then there's
still some mudding uh
to be completed in the front portion
where like the lobby and some of the cat
rooms
they are saying it's about 86 completed
and we're still on for a december 2022
completion date
for the positions we hired seven
individuals
in the kennel area and i believe three
in the front
yes thank you bernice just told me that
there's three individuals in the front
that were brought online
so we're excited to have those
individuals the good news about that
means is that we were able to
discontinue use of the temporary workers
that we were paying for
that made up that
that force that workforce while we were
doing that
another good update is we have submitted
all the paperwork needed to move for our
portion complete for the trap new to
return coordinator we're actually going
to call it a community cap program
manager
i think it lists better what that
individual is going to be doing is
managing that entire program
so that is submitted to human resources
i
not only sent it to our human resources
rep but also i
tagged
human resource director on it and also
eric on it and our chair on it and so
they all know that where it is uh so
we'll follow up and continue to be there
the positions that were approved
we're still
working on getting position numbers
all those things that need to be gotten
and submit that
so we can start recruiting for those
other positions as well but overall
things are
really good i was a little worried with
all that water we're going to find out
more issues but
the places seems to be really well
sealed up and thank you to our
our building
supervisor he is very thorough in what
he does

of the current facility we saw noted in

the potential for rehabbing and i was
just wondering if there was
consideration for hazard
where is it in its useful life
versus rehab versus knockdown
portions of it are brand new the front
lobby is brand new it was completed i
believe about three years ago
and also the admin hallway everything
all the floors were redone in in the
front first part of the center
so a lot of it is is very reusable the
outside shell is
sturdy
some of the kennels like we saw in the
presentation the kennels need to be
redone so a lot of the inside things do
need to be redone
and i'm glad you reminded me of that i
forgot to also
update on the community report that
uh the county was kind enough to
to guide me on
the ice icip process
and so we were able to get
that project that i set up just the
first we broke it up into three zones or
three
areas and so we were able to get the
first area and that was the biggest one
over five million dollars we requested
and get that on the icip for legislation
funding
and michelle i can't remember her last
name with the county
blackwell yes she called me personally
we hanged out a lot of the questions
uh and so we're looking forward to see
how that
how that moves forward as well
now the process of
contacting legislators legislators
bringing them in showing you know what
the project is and why we need it starts

really appreciate clint you including

your decision-making processes and how
you kind of prioritize things and the
pressures that the the externalities
that you
that you're really weighing and how you
make those work for for the shelter in
the community
and so that's i just really want to
